Message from Manitoba Metis Federation
Leader
President David Chartrand
The Aboriginal Justice Inquiry recognized that the current
child and family services failed the Metis people in this province.
The MOU signed between the MMF and the Province of Manitoba on February
22, 2000 marks a significant turning point in the history of the
Metis people of Manitoba. We are pleased that this provincial government
recognizes the right of Metis people to care for our children and
communities.
This process honours our Metis ancestors and their
contribution to Manitoba and Canada by returning the authority
the right and the responsibility to care for our children,
families and communities, to the Metis people.
The Metis people are well positioned to take on
all responsibilities regarding the future health, development and
governance of the Metis in Manitoba. We look forward to the challenges
and opportunities provided by the restructuring of the Child and
Family System to better reflect the cultural uniqueness and diversity
of Manitoba.
I understand that much work needs to be done and
the process, while long awaited, will require the concerted effort
of all parties in order to bear the fruit of healthy children and
families. I would like to thank all the participants in the process
for their hard work and dedication in achieving this most important
objective.
We look forward to working with the Province and
the First Nations under the joint protocol, towards the recognition
of jurisdiction of the Metis People, enhancement of the lives of
the Metis People of Manitoba, ensuring the protection of our children
and the preservation of our culture.
